Understanding Our Behavior Assessment Procedure
Led exclusively by our Pet Behavior Coaches, our Behavior Assessment Procedure is a carefully orchestrated process of observation and interaction. These specialized coaches are trained to observe how each dog interacts with other dogs and our Pet Handlers. The process begins with a one-on-one introduction in the pet’s suite, allowing them to acclimate to their surroundings. As they grow more comfortable, they’re taken out to the play yards and gradually introduced to other pet guests, where we assess temperament, playstyle, compatibility, and individual cues that indicate their needs.
New vs. Established Guests
You might wonder how we can determine the perfect playgroup for a dog after just one meeting. Well, we utilize the insights provided by our customers in their pets “Getting To Know Our Guest” form. This form offers a glimpse into a pet’s habits, playstyle, and behavior. While this form is a great starting point for our assessment, we understand that pets can behave differently in new environments. That is why our experienced team utilizes a combination of factors—such as play style, size, age, and individual preferences—to assign pets to the most suitable group. We also remain vigilant for any signs that may indicate a mismatch, ensuring the safety and comfort of all our guests.
For our existing guests, it is important to reassess and ensure their group is still a good fit. Behavior can change, and as dogs get older, their needs change. Recently altered pets, guests who have not been assessed in two years, and dogs who have reached a new developmental milestone (1 ½, 3, 5, 10 yrs of age based on dog breed) are reassessed for this reason. Our team’s goal is to keep pets with playmates they prefer and ensure age-specific needs are met.
Tailored Care for Every Guest
The assessment process for our Cattery guests is slightly different. It emphasizes their comfort in their suite and interactions with our staff, although cat-to-cat play isn’t permitted. We take note of their preferred hiding spots, feeding preferences, health concerns, and the best spots to pet them.

A Fear Free approach is important to us. That is why accurate assessments are paramount to a positive experience for dogs and their owners. Rushing or overlooking this process could lead to anxiety or stress for the pet and potential altercations within the group. Our commitment to thorough assessment ensures that each pet is set up for success, enjoying playtime that matches their energy level and preferences.
Individual Play and Special Considerations
While we focus primarily on group play, we recognize that individual play may be preferred or necessary for certain pets. Our unaltered guests over six months of age undergo a behavior assessment to determine their suitability for group play, with ongoing reassessments to accommodate any changes in behavior or needs over time.
