A message from Dr. Melissa Boland at Lakewood Veterinary Hospital
A dog’s weight is a key health factor, and any extra pounds can lead to a number of health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, some cancers, and respiratory problems. Unfortunately, obesity is the most common preventable disease in dogs, and about 60% of dogs in the US are overweight.
Feeding your pet appropriately is the most important aspect of helping them maintain a lean body weight. Follow these tips to help ensure your dog is the best they can be:
- Feed based on life stage (puppy, adult, senior).
- Follow bag recommendations based on their expected ideal body weight. Start at the low end of their recommended range and increase if needed.
- Most pets get extra calories through treats and table scraps, which add up quickly. Treats should not exceed 10% of their daily calorie intake.
- All pets benefit from exercise and movement. Just like us, you should aim to exercise your pet for 20-30 minutes per day. This can include a walk, throwing the ball, etc. This helps with mental stimulation as well.
- If your pet is overweight, consult your vet about the best way to help them lose weight safely and effectively. This can include food and treat reduction, weight loss diets, and exercise adjustments.
