Taking Care: Doodle Coat

A deeper dive into “Caring for Your Pet’s Coat,” our article from August of last year.

Doodle DogDoodles, a cross between poodles and other breeds such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, or Bernese Mountain dogs, have quickly become a popular family pet. They have a reputation for being affectionate, intelligent, and hypoallergenic. One thing to keep in mind when considering a doodle as a pet is coat care. Their fluffy and curly coat needs regular maintenance to keep them healthy and free from matting.

Brushing is one of the most crucial aspects of keeping your doodle’s coat healthy. It is recommended to brush your doodle at least every other day to prevent mats from forming. The type of brush you use can make a significant difference in the effectiveness of your grooming routine. A slicker brush is the most popular option for doodles. It has fine, tightly spaced wire bristles that can reach the undercoat, which helps to remove any loose hair or tangles. Additionally, a metal comb with wide-spaced teeth can be used to check for any remaining tangles and ensure that the coat is smooth. When using the metal comb, start at skin level. If you cannot start at skin level, your pet likely has mats. You can find these tools in our retail area or any local pet store.

Regular visits to the groomer are also essential to keep your doodle’s coat healthy. While the frequency of grooming may vary depending on the type of doodle you have, it is generally recommended to have your doodle professionally bathed every 4-6 weeks and groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. During the grooming session, the groomer will typically perform a thorough brushing, trimming, and clipping of the coat. Additionally, they will check for any skin or coat problems, such as hot spots or pelting, which can be treated promptly to avoid any further issues.

Taking care of a doodle’s coat requires some effort, but it is worth it to keep your pet healthy and happy. Regular brushing with a slicker brush or metal comb can help prevent mats and tangles, and consistent grooming appointments will help maintain a healthy coat. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your doodle’s coat remains in top condition.
